Frequently asked questions
What is Waystone?
An off-road trail app: trail guides with every obstacle rated and explained, live trail conditions from people who just drove them, tools for the trail like Follow mode and offline maps, and group trail runs with chat.
How much does it cost?
Waystone is free while we’re in beta. If we add paid features later, we’ll tell you before anything changes.
Is it on iPhone and Android?
Both, and it’s in beta testing now. It will be in the App Store and Google Play soon. Join the beta to get in early. The website works on any phone or computer.
Does it work without cell service?
Yes. Download a trail’s offline map before you go. GPS doesn’t need a signal, so Follow mode and recording keep working. Check-ins, photos and messages send once you’re back in service.
Where do the trails come from?
From our members and our team. New trails, obstacles and points of interest are reviewed before they go live.
How accurate is the trail information?
It’s only as current as the last report. Trails change fast with weather and washouts, so check the latest check-ins and flags, scout anything you’re unsure about, and drive at your own risk. Off-roading is dangerous.
What do the obstacle ratings mean?
Every trail and obstacle is rated 0 to 10: 0–1 Scenic, 2–3 Easy, 4–6 Medium, 7–10 Hard. Ratings come with notes on lines, clearance and what rig it takes.
What is a Trail Run?
A group run someone is leading on a trail. You see the date, the trail, the rig limits (tire size, lockers, winch) and the skill level, ask to join or join right away, and chat with the crew once you’re in.
What’s a private trail run?
A run only people with the invite link can see. The leader shares the link by text or any app. Open it, sign up or sign in, and join (or ask to join if the leader approves people).
Who can see my location?
Your home area is rounded to about 5–7 miles (others see just the town name) and only used to show trails and drivers near you. Check-ins don’t save your position, and photos have their location removed before upload.
Can I keep my profile private?
Yes. Private profiles show only your trail name, level and points. You can also block anyone; they won’t see your rigs, activity or runs, and you won’t see theirs.
How do I add a trail?
Record it in the app as you drive, or upload a GPX file from Gaia, onX, Garmin or CalTopo. Waypoints marked as obstacles come in as obstacles; everything else comes in as waypoints. An admin reviews new trails before they go public, and you get Trailblazer points when they’re approved.
What is the Waystone Code?
The trail etiquette every run follows: be respectful, no alcohol on the trail, one spotter at a time, safe recoveries only, right of way, Tread Lightly, and nobody gets left behind.
How do I delete my account?
In the app, go to Me › Account › Delete account. Your account, photos and posts are removed. Trails you added stay, without your name.
How do I contact you?
